Derisking Subsea Geological Storage of CO2 in the UK
Derisking Subsea Geological Storage of CO2 in the UK: Progressing Measurement, Monitoring and Verification
Aims
Hosted in collaboration with Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS) for this FREE workshop, this free, one-day workshop organised by the Scottish Sensor Systems Centgre is aimed at:
- Businesses of all sizes involved in subsea sensing and reservoir monitoring
- Companies interested in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies and schemes
- Industry regulators
- Scientists and engineers interested in, or active, in Carbon Capture and Storage
- Sensor developers, communications, and data processing experts.
Carbon Capture &Storage
Offshore CO 2 storage in the UK requires the adoption of existing or new technologies used in subsea and reservoir environments. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) industries need to manage the injection into offshore geological storage formations and ensure its safe containment for thousands of years.
In order to obtain a CO 2 storage licence, an operator has to provide a geological model predicting how the CO 2 will behave in the storage complex over the short, medium and long term. A two-pronged attack involving predictive models and sensible monitoring techniques will underpin the CO 2 plume location, pressure propagation, and reservoir and seal integrity.
Operators can draw on knowledge and experience from Enhance Oil Recovery (EOR) schemes. From injection onwards the operator is required to compare the actual behaviour, against the predicted model to detect irregularities, and calibrate and validate the model. A robust monitoring plan is required for decades after injection has stopped and the storage site is closed. There is a need to identify and develop optimum technologies and improve the accuracy of these monitoring strategies.
Workshop Aims
This workshop will address processes for developing a collective understanding of measure, monitoring and verification (MMV) requirements between regulators, storage operators and technology providers. Both S3C and SCCS will be seeking partners to undertake funded research and development projects to address issues and opportunities identified in the workshop. You will find our more about:
- Regulatory environment around monitoring and verification of CO2 storage sites
- Predictive modelling and verification technologies
- Monitoring and leakage detection and quantification
- Data collection, processing and analysis
- Funding options to support collaborative projects
Technologies will include:
- Seismic Reflection Monitoring
- Passive Seismicity Monitoring
- Gravimetry
- Tilt Meters and Remote Sensing
- Geochemical Monitoring
- Remote Sensing
- Tracers
- Downhole sensor arrays
- Well wireline logs
