Feasibility of G-SAR toolbox for remote monitoring of infrastructure stability (Glasgow/Scottish Canals)
University: Dr Zhenhong Li, School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow
Collaborative Partner: Scottish Canals
Project Type: Concept (£5K grant)
Project Duration: Four weeks (beginning November 2012)
Project Abstract
The aim of this proof-of-concept project is to demonstrate the potential of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology as a remote sensing tool for infrastructure stability monitoring, particularly at remote and inaccessible sites.
University of Glasgow researchers have developed ‘G-SAR Toolbox’, a software toolkit that precisely monitors both small and large surface movements (from millimetres to metres) from SAR imagery.
Scottish Canals have identified a requirement for a remote sensing tool to accurately monitor dam/embankment movement, especially in difficult to access locations. This will provide early warning of potential failure and maximise effective use of staff time by reducing requirements for field visits. Scottish Canals will use this project to make longer-term decisions on its own requirements for a tailored monitoring system.
S3C Project Impact
This project has the potential to offer a technology solution to help manage Scottish Canals’ infrastructure in a sustainable manner, in order to fulfil the economic, social and environmental potential of the network. More widely, by demonstrating the capabilities of the G-SAR Toolbox, the University can offer either an in-house service, and/or develop a commercial tool for licensing to companies who require infrastructure monitoring.
