Scottish Sensor Systems Centre

Cost effective sensor solutions for remote inclinometer manufacturing (UWS/KSG Ltd.)

University: Kenneth Cameron, University of the West of Scotland

Collaborative Partner: KSG Ltd.

Project Type: Prototype (£5k Grant)

Project Duration: 13 weeks

Project Abstract

KSG’s key product is the RECLINE remote inclinometer system, designed and manufactured in Scotland. The device is sold mostly to the entertainment industry, and used by system technicians and audio rental companies to save time when setting up audio/sound systems for music concerts and other events.

This project will investigate using an alternative sensor to reduce the cost of manufacturing a remote inclinometer. Staff from the University of the West of Scotland will replace the current inclinometer sensor, and design and manufacture an interface to allow it to talk to the current receiver unit, The design of this new circuit will then be added to the power supply circuit to enable just one PCB to be employed. UWS will also make modifications to the current power supply circuit board to improve flexibility with other system parts.

S3C Project Impact

By finding a lower cost solution to the current sensor, thereby reducing overall manufacturing costs, KSG Ltd. can take a distinct edge over its competitors. KSG’s current clients are mostly companies in the entertainment industry who hire equipment out to bands / artists. The potential market for this device is much wider, and with a different price point, the device could be marketed to other areas and used for other applications that involve measuring any difficult to reach incline or angle, e.g.,flown line arrays(loudspeakers), drain pipe inspection, construction, mast monitoring, mining, and marine applications.
