Time domain reflectometry signal analysis by probabilistic methods (Aberdeen/Zenith Oilfield)

University: Dr David Hendy, Electronics and Optical Engineering Research Group, University of Aberdeen

Collaborative Partner: Zenith Oilfield Technology Ltd.

Project Type: Investigative (Grant £20K)

Project Duration: 24 months

Project Abstract

Zenith Oilfield Technology design, develops, assembles and supports leading-edge solutions related to the gathering and analysis of oil well data and the design of downhole completion equipments. The company has over 4,000 downhole monitoring systems worldwide. Its principal driver is the development of ground-breaking oilfield technology that results in enhanced oil recovery and production from more challenging reserves.

Time domain reflectometry waveforms are normally displayed on a graphical system and interpreted by visual means. In conjunction with research staff from the University of Aberdeen, the project will look at automated methods for the interpretation and analysis of such waveforms in an emerging sensors technology area related to oil and gas exploration and production.

Probabilistic techniques allied to simulation of the known conditions in which the waveforms were obtained will be used to present a user of the system with those interpretation scenarios with the highest probabilities. Both Bayesian and Dempster-Schafer approaches to representation of the problem will be investigated.

Project Impact

This project builds on several years’ sensors innovation developed at Zenith, and support from S3C for this project will contribute to the retention of the future development and production of this technology in Scotland.
